Funny how legislating morality has been turned into a "Conservative" issue when liberals do it too. If legislating morality is not the governments business than why do we have laws against murder and stealing. Why are there programs like welfare, medicare, social security, and HUD. In those cases the government is making a moral decision to help people. What about Aids prevention and feeding the hungry or stopping someone like Hitler from killing millions of people should governments not ever take a moral stand? Despite your rhetoric, almost every legislative issue I can think of is a moral issue. Morality is simply a question of what is right or wrong.

In Summa Theologica Thomas Aquinas stated that man made law should not legislate human vices. It is between the person and God and not the State.

Ah, thanks, Libertine. Yes, great thoughts on what Christ said about knocking -- not barging in. Force is not at all what he preached -- he told us to evangelize, to spread morality through the tongue, not through the gun.

A very well written article that I'm largely in agreement with, though I'm an agnostic and would be considered a 'sexually immoral" person by most Christians, as I am nonmonogamous and rather promiscuous. I find that the opinions you express in this article to be most refreshing coming from a Christian. Though an agnostic, I have read the Bible fairly extensively, however.

Though some would consider me "immoral" by Christian standards, I don't consider myself so -- I simply have a different set of sexual ethics. To me, morality of all kinds is summed up by the Golden Rule, "Treat others as you would wish to be treated". I am legislating morality because I believe that in a free society that people ought to be free to do anything they wish, as long as it does not infringe upon the rights of others to believe and do differently or otherwise infringe upon their rights.

In a diverse society like ours, we also cannot legislate morality, for the question would be, "whose morality?" Though Christians are a majority in the USA, we cannot impose Christian morality upon everyone. Indeed, Christ said, "I stand at the door and knock", not "I come to the door and break it down"! And this isn't even addressing the fact that not all Christians are in one accord about all moral issues.

I could go on, but I don't want to leave a novel in your comment box.

Again, good points!
