Empirical Deism

The entire basis of the current God-debate is wrong headed. We seem to be taking the approach that “proving” the existence of God is similar to proving that the minimum wage increases unemployment among minors, or that gun control increases crime. We seem to be taking the approach that it’s a political or economic debate rather than an analysis of the senses. We seem to view the proof for God must necessarily look like the proof of a principle or law of nature, rather than simply proof for the existence of a person. You believe in the Wal-Mart greeter because you see and hear them. You believe your neighbor exists because you see and and hear them. You believe your wife exists because you see, feel and hear her. You don’t … Read entire article »

Absence

I’m currently in a hotel in Texas for a high-school debate tournament, hence my absence. It will be a few more days to a week before I’m able to post again. When I get back, I’ll be posting a short, mini-defense of capitalism, an explanation of the nature of the existence of God (or why most perspectives on the God debate miss a fairly simple observation), and a short explanation of how I concoct a theory. … Read entire article »

The Reluctant Candidate

Fred Thompson made some shock waves when he said that he doesn’t necessarily want to be president. He hasn’t had the ambition of the powerful position for years. This isn’t exactly something every candidate will talk openly about. The All American Blogger notes the similarities between Fred Thompson and George Washington. I have to agree with him. Thompson’s explanation is shocking, admirable and incredibly encouraging. Maybe there’s hope after all. … Read entire article »

Chinese Liberty

I was looking over my YouTube profile earlier today, and discovered a pleasant surprise — one of my videos that I made about a year ago has had over 50,000 views, and hundreds of positive ratings and comments. It’s about the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. My old video is currently the most popular and most viewed video on that event. I’m honestly completely shocked. Note: I’m still working on the coming article on legislating morality. Life has been incredibly hectic lately. It will be up soon, though. … Read entire article »

A Debate

I’m pleased to announce a coming debate between Reason and Capitalism and Logical Consistency. Jason, at Logical Consistency, is a staunch conservative, so we agree on issues like economics and gun control. However, we completely disagree on legislating morality. Jason and I will be posting a series of essays refuting each other on the issue of using coercion to enforce morality simply for the sake of morality. I look forward to the discussion. … Read entire article »

A Series of Short Stories

I’ve decided to continue with a project started some months ago — a longish series of essays about a lonely professor who discovers the meaning of life and death. I’ve always wanted to write philosophical and political fiction, so this will be dabbling in them both. I’ve written dozens of short stories before, but each one was lacking in depth and style to the extent that even I didn’t take them seriously. This website will be the location of my first significant longish story — it will be comprised of dozens of short stories, or, if you will, “chapters.” I’ll be editing this post as I continue to write the series. If you don’t see any additions for a significant period of time, be sure to comment — I’ll probably need a … Read entire article »

Come What May

I finally watched the trailer of Advent Film Group’s latest movie, “Come What May”. It’s about a young man who must choose between a scholarship and making just one morally corrupt argument in his debate career. The trailer gave me goosebumps. I can most certainly relate to the main character, given that I’ve been debating in the NCFCA for the past four years. Sometimes making that one morally corrupt argument seems so enticing. It’s easy to forget the whole purpose to our actions — doing the right thing. I most certainly plan on purchasing the DVD of this film, if not just to fund the creation of more films by Advent Film Group in the future. “Do what’s right.” … Read entire article »
